What happened - Kiwi social media influencers released from Iran

Two New Zealanders - who spent months detained by Iranian authorities - are finally free.

Christopher Richwhite and Bridget Thackwray disappeared after entering the conservative country in July.

The New Zealand government says the couple have endured "difficult circumstances" but are now safe and well, and are out of the country.

Iranian journalist Alireza Mohebbi told World News Editor Kate Gregan it would have been a different story if they were dual citizens.

Listen to Kate's World News package above for an interview with Alireza Mohebbi and a breakdown of the final moments before Richwhite and Thackwray were detained.
