Cool Cruising: Younger generations flock to hassle-free holidays on the high seas

Apparently, cruise ships are becoming cool with the kids!

Often considered the travel experience of choice for the silver set, Flight Centre is now seeing a dramatic increase in interest from people aged between 18 and 30, with bookings more than doubling in just under a year.

General manager of marketing Jodie Brunard told Tova O'Brien she believes they are looking for cost and time-efficient holidays.

"Younger passengers at the moment are looking for easy holidays," Brunard said.

"For cruising, they're really hassle-free, they're good value for money and they can just jump on board and everything is there."

Brunard said cruise operators are showcasing new features aimed towards the younger demographic, which could be another reason why their bookings have increased significantly.

"They have things like speakeasy bars, mixologists, they're also doing theming as well - like Pride and Halloween," she said.

"Social media plays a massive part… seeing the ships in-person but also seeing what people are recommending definitely drives people to get on board.

"We are seeing across TikTok with the younger demographic, it's generating quite a few views out there in popularity so it's certainly bringing cruise to the forefront."
