Residents 'trapped' in West Auckland suburb due to road closures following Cyclone Gabrielle

The coastal West Auckland settlement of Karekare, south of Piha, is feeling let down by officials.

The community was hit hard, with homes destroyed, power cut off and massive slips in numerous places.

Long-term resident Sarah Cannon doesn't think they are getting the help they need.

She told Lloyd Burr they have been significantly affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.

"We have had 16 landslides on our two main roads," Cannon said.

"There were six houses that slipped off their foundations and some of those landed on the road as well."

While she said they have received an amazing response from Auckland Emergency Management, the main issue is that residents have no access in or out of Karekare.

"We've been getting helicopter drops of food. We've had welfare visits. The building inspector team has finished doing inspections on all the houses so everybody knows the status of their property now.

"Our main issue is that our roads are officially closed…which makes living here incredibly difficult when most of us travel out of the area for work and school."

Cannon told Burr the more rain they face, the worse the roads get and all they want is some information about when there will be a solution.

"We just need a way in and out so that we can earn a living and get back to some kind of normality."

Cannon has been unable to go to work in New Lynn and said a lot of other residents are in a similar situation.

"We'd all just like to know what the plan is so we can make informed decisions about what we need to do to be able to live our lives."

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister visited Hastings and Napier on Wednesday, getting a first-hand look at the immense task ahead.

Chris Hipkins was supposed to make it to Wairoa too, but could not get there, for a second time.

He said some things he has seen today, will stay with him.

“When you’re driving past orchards and you see caravans and cars in the trees, you just realise the strength of the natural disaster that unfolded. That’s pretty confronting.”
