Marama Davidson excuses 'violent cis white men' comment after being hit by motorcyclist

Marama Davidson has come under fire following a video posted on Twitter of the Green Party co-leader claiming as a prevention violence minister she knows 'it is white cis men' who cause violence in the world.

Davidson released a statement on Monday afternoon saying she was confronted by a representative from Counterspin who was filming her and 'accosting her with inflammatory questions'.

She also referred to being hit by a motorcyclist prior to the video being recorded.

She writes, 'Still in shock, I was not as clear in my comments to the conspiracy theorists Counterspin as I should have been.'

Davidson goes on to outline her belief that violence is unacceptable in any community and that she is committed to an Aotearoa where all people live safe and peaceful lives.

The Green Party co-leader admits she should have made it more clear in her comments that violence happens in every community and that her intention was to affirm that trans people are deserving of support.

She writes that she wanted to keep the focus on the fact that men are the main perpetrators of violence and will continue to stand with trans and non-binary people supporting action to ensure that everyone can live their lives without fear, hate or discrimination.
