Lionel Messi at FIFA World Cup becomes most-liked Instagram post ever

Co-founder of Facebook and now owner of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, took to Instagram on Wednesday morning, saying professional footballer Lionel Messi has the most liked post in "Instagram history".

After winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup championship earlier this week against defending champions France, Messi posted to Instagram with the caption: "CAMPEONES DEL MUNDO!!!!!!! 🌎🏆" which translates to "CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!"

Messi received more than 65 million likes hours after posting it, with the number continuing to rise. 

The post is a carousel of Messi and his teammates celebrating their win.

The first image in the carousel shows the football player holding the trophy over his head, smiling ear to ear as he looks out at the arena's crowd.

This was Argentina's first World Cup triumph in 36 years, defeating France in a 4-2 penalty shootout in Qatar.

With Instagram's translation, Messi's caption went on to say: "So many times I dreamed it, so much I wanted it that I still don't fall, I can't believe it......"

"Thank you so much to my family, to all who support me and also to all who believed in us.

"We prove once again that Argentinians when we fight together and united we are able to achieve what we aim. The merit of this group, which is above individuals, is the strength of all fighting for the same dream that was also the one of all Argentinians... We did it!!! 

"LET'S GO ARGENTINA DAMN!!!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 We're seeing each other very soon…"

The post received millions more likes than the previous record-breaking post, which was held by @world_record_egg, who posted a simple image of an egg.
