Political insiders suggest matter of if not when for Trump return to Presidential candidacy

In perhaps the strongest signal yet that Donald Trump is plotting another run for the White House, the former President has released a campaign-style video.

Trump has neither confirmed nor denied his intention to run in 2024 - but political insiders say it’s a matter of ‘when’, not ‘if’.

With more, here’s our World News Editor Kate Gregan.

Donald Trump was impeached twice, lost the 2020 election by more than 7,000,000 votes, and is entangled in a number of criminal investigations…. But it appears that’s not enough to stop him from trying to lead America for a second time.

"We are a nation in decline. We are a failing nation."

The almost four-minute long video was uploaded in the wake of federal agents executing a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago.

"We are a nation where free speech is no longer allowed, where crime is rampant like never before, where the economy has been collapsing, where more people died of COVID in 2021 than in 2020."

The video concludes with a quote reading: "…the best is yet to come."

Only one president has returned to power after losing reelection.

America’s 22nd and 24th president - Stephen Grover Cleveland - is the only commander in chief ever elected to two non-consecutive terms.

Like Trump, Grover Cleveland lost reelection amid charges of voter fraud... but unlike the 2020 election, there actually was clear evidence of fraud in some states.

Former Republican Congressman Carlos Curbelo is convinced a re-run is imminent - but believes Trump's intentions are self-serving.

"When Donald Trump ran in 2016 for the first time it was about self-interest, it was about building his brand and this now, this next run for President which I think is almost a certainty, is part of his legal defence."

Donald Trump is facing a number of criminal probes - from possible election interference to alleged financial crimes.

A sitting president can't be criminally charged. - so re-election could be his 'Get Out of Jail Free' card.

But Trump's support among Republicans is slipping.

A recent poll shows about half of GOP voters are ready to leave him behind...

Senator Lindsey Graham says he will support Donald Trump if he indeed does decide to run - but says Trump must look to the future.

"Talking about 2020 is not what people want to hear, he likes hearing it but people want to hear about how can you secure a broken border? How can you stop rampant crime? What can you do to get the economy back on its feet and how can you make it safer again, focus on solving the problems Americans are living with."

While one political analyst - Jennifer Rubin - says if Trump does run, it would only benefit Democrats.

"Democrats would be thrilled if he announced in September because the more this election is about Trump, about Trump coming back to power, about January 6, the better the Democrats are going to do.

"The more it's about simply a referendum on Joe Biden's economic policy, the worse they are going to do."

Meanwhile, Joe Biden's popularity is on the up - a recent national poll has found 40 percent of Americans approve of his job performance.
