Hurricane hunters - Flying through the centre of the storm

Florida governor Ron DeSantis has called Ian "A 500-year flood event"

As hurricane Ian intensified on its way toward the Florida Coast, 'hurricane hunters' were in the sky doing something almost unimaginable, flying through the centre of the storm.

With each pass, the scientists aboard these planes take measurements that satellites can't and send them to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center.

Madeline Montgomery a reporter for Atlanta News First was aboard the plane for 10 hours as it and flew directly into the eye.

Montgomery spoke to Today FM's World News Editor Kate Gregan about what it was like flying through the storm.

"I may be crazy, but I was not scared," Montgomery told Gregan.

"It was a really wild experience knowing that you're going through something as strong and powerful and large as a hurricane and it was a very bumpy ride, think turbulence on a plane when you're flying to vacation and it is that time 100."
