Italian government bans 'dangerous gatherings of more than 50 people'

Italy’s new far-right government has announced a crackdown on illegal raves.

Described as a ban on 'dangerous gatherings of more than 50 people', the new law could bring stiff penalties.

Our World News Editor Kate Gregan has the details.

The party's over in Italy.

Under the new law, ravers could face up to six years in prison and a €10,000 fine while organisers could be wiretapped.

It comes after authorities cracked down on an illegal party at the weekend.

It was supposed to last for 48 hours in an abandoned warehouse - but after 36 hours, and numerous complaints from nearby residents - police shut it down.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni saw this as an opportunity.

"We've seen yet another illegal rave and in recent years we have given the impression of being lax when it comes to respecting the rules and the law.

"We the state will not turn a blind eye and fail to act when faced with law-breaking."

Meloni argues the new law will protect people from harm, but many aren't convinced.

The Prime Minister has been criticized for targeting young ravers, while ignoring a fascist march at the weekend.

The rally saw several thousand people - many sporting the nazi salute - celebrate the late dictator Benito Mussolini.

But the government says the two events were "completely different things"

Mark Lowen is the BBC's Rome Correspondent.

"The Government says they've got nothing to do with each other and the Mussolini commemoration had no threat to public order and public security but it is seen here as an indication of which way the political wind is blowing and opponents are calling fowl."

The Prime Minister is also facing scrutiny for appointing a new minister, who caused outrage after photos emerged of him wearing a Nazi swastika on his arm.
