France offers free emergency contraception to women under 26 years old

Condoms will be free for those under the age of 26 in French pharmacies from January 1, 2023, in what French President Emmanuel Macron is calling, “a small revolution in preventative healthcare.”

While birth control has been free for women aged up to 25 years old since January 2022, emergency contraception will now also come at no cost for all women without a prescription from the beginning of 2023.

The new measures were initially aimed at 18-25-year-olds but have since been changed to include minors.

Women under the age of 26 can also request an Intra Uterine Device (IUD) as a form of emergency contraception, the cost of which will be 100 percent reimbursed on prescription.
