WORLD NEWS REPORT: Devastation compounded in Syria following severe earthquake

Let's return now to the powerful earthquakes that have devastated much of southern Turkey and northern Syria.

The first quake - a magnitude 7.8 - hit in the early darkness of a winter morning. It was followed by a 7.7 less than 12 hours later.

At least 5,100 people are dead with the toll expected to rise significantly

But in Syria, the devastation is compounded -- with the region already struggling after more than 11 years of civil war.
