Matilda Green on her relationship with 'The Bachelor'

Matilda Green gained instant fame winning the first season of 'The Bachelor New Zealand'.

Not seen on TV is how difficult it was to make their relationship last.

Green joins Mel Homer for a chat on the Sunday Café about meeting her husband Art Green on 'The Bachelor' and how  the happy couple have made it work for 8 years and counting.

"We came off the show and there was this pressure that we were in love and that we were going to get married straight away," said Green.

"But we really didn't know each other, we hadn't spent any time off camera.

"We both had to kind of decompress from the show.

"We took a while to get back to normal after that, to just figure out how we were together as a couple and just take all the pressure off and take it slow."

It was always strange for Green in public at the time with the constant pressure from New Zealanders wanting their relationship to either succeed or fail.

"We would go to a media event or something which was quite new for us as well, and people would be like, oh, I really wanted Alicia to win.

"I just sort of go, oh, did you? Oh, yeah, that's a shame.

"It was the most bizarre experience of my life, and neither of us knew how to deal with it.

"People's behaviour changes quite a lot when they see you as a character.

"There was no decency on a human being level. It was very much like you're a character on TV, so I can say whatever I want to you."

As their romance blossomed after the show and away from the cameras, Matilda and Art went on to have two children - first a little boy, Milo, and then a daughter, Autumn.

Matilda now hosts the 'Untidy' Podcast alongside Hannah Davison, discussing all things around parenting in New Zealand while also being a busy mum.
