Oscars 2023: Entertainment reporter spills predictions

Happy Oscars Day!

The fun has begun with all the red carpet gorgeousness on Monday morning, with everything getting down to business from 1 pm (NZT).

While Will Smith’s been forced to watch from home like most of us, there’s already plenty of drama unfolding.

Entertainment reporter for the KTLA Morning News in LA, Sam Rubin told Tova O'Brien he is "interested to see what happens".

"I think Everything Everywhere All At Once could likely sweep, dominate, make history," Rubin said.

"[It has] 11 nominations, I think it could win eight or nine, including Best Picture. This could be a crowning night for that movie, which was shot now three years ago."

Rubin has been reporting at the Oscars for many, many years and admitted this year's carpet is the smallest one he's ever seen.

Not only that, he told O'Brien the ratio between men and women is 8:2, which also reflects the ratio between male and female directors.

"There are efforts to diversify, extraordinary efforts - they call it DEI - diversity, equity and inclusion - but when you're starting this far behind, it takes a long time to catch up."

"It remains an issue the Academy is attempting to deal with as best they can," he said.

When asked if he thinks Jimmy Kimmel will be feeling the pressure of hosting this year's Oscars, Rubin said he predicts a "slap joke" will be made in the first 10 minutes.

"Normally, Will Smith would hand out the Best Actress Oscar, having won Best Actor [last year]. Obviously, that will not take place.

"I think Tom Cruise will get that designation and I think Tom Cruise when he comes out, will receive a standing ovation."
