'Complete bulls**t' - Joseph Ahuriri's brother says police are wrong about his disappearance

The family of missing man Joseph Ahuriri are furious with the police's lack of support and their insinuations about his character.

Ahuriri was last heard from over a week ago in Napier during Cyclone Gabrielle, but authorities have suggested that his disappearance may not be related to the weather event.

Speaking to Tova O'Brien, Ahuriri's brother, Mike, expressed his frustration with the police's statement that it is unlikely his disappearance is linked to the cyclone but also admitted it can't be ruled out.

"That's complete bullshit. We know he left his motel the night of the storm heading to Gisborne. I don't know why the police think it's not cyclone related. It sounds like they think he's a criminal," Mike said.

When asked if Joseph had a criminal past, Mike confirmed that he had been in trouble before, but said he had turned his life around and was supporting his nine children. He added that the police's insinuations about his brother's character were adding to the family's distress.

"It's not knowing, hearing nothing from civil defence, hearing nothing from the police...we're all getting tired of it, even mum. I'm just over this whole week."

He said it feels like the police are making assumptions about his brother and not giving them the support they need to find him.

Mike also criticised the police for suggesting that Joseph may have a reluctance to engage with them.

"He probably would [be reluctant to engage], but it depends on what the situation is or where he is."

The family is calling on the police to provide more support and to stop making assumptions about Joseph's character.

"We've all had our ups and downs. He's had his ups and downs. He is a loving father, a loving brother.

"He's got a heart of gold. He thinks about his kids before he thinks about himself."

They are also asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.
