'We need diggers' - Esk Valley business crying out for help following Cyclone Gabrielle

The aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle has left many businesses in the Esk Valley community struggling to recover.

Nearly two weeks after the storm, locals are still waiting for help and are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of action from local or central government.

The community is crying out for assistance, as the devastating effects of the storm have left many businesses in a dire situation.

With buildings and infrastructure severely damaged, it is impossible for many of these establishments to resume normal operations, leaving owners and employees without a source of income.

Owners of the Kiwiesque Luxury Lodge, Justine Wilson, spoke to Rachel Smalley about the situation, stating that they have not received any word from either local or central government, and have yet to see any heavy machinery arrive to clean up the damage caused by the cyclone.

"We've got three caravans tipped upside down at the end of our driveway," Wilson said.

"It's a major job and until that sort of thing is fixed, we can't even look at opening anything else.

"We need the council to come in, we need the diggers, we need the drains to be unblocked.

"We need to know, when are these things going to be shifted, what's the plan?"

The Government announced businesses in cyclone-affected regions including Esk Valley can claim up to NZD$40,000 to help them get back on their feet. However, Wilson said their community needs more than just financial assistance.

"Money doesn't just make it alright, it's about action," she said.

"We've got three businesses in this one little area, and all three of us need to be back up and running but we seriously need help. We need the council, and the government to come and have a look.

"There's just so much more that needs to be done," she said.
