Waka Kotahi postpones Walk It, Wheel It event over Auckland Harbour Bridge

Waka Kotahi has announced the postponement of its planned Walk It, Wheel It events, which were scheduled to take place on the Auckland Harbour Bridge across the Waitematā Harbour over the last three Sundays of March.

The decision was made in response to clean-up efforts following Cyclone Gabrielle, with all available contracting resources being directed towards response and recovery efforts.

Deborah Hume, Waka Kotahi National Manager of Multimodal Integration, highlighted that the top priority for Waka Kotahi is currently restoring access to isolated communities in the North Island to enable essential services and supplies to get through.

Crews have been working tirelessly to reopen roads across the state highway network. Auckland Transport is also dealing with several road network disruptions across the Auckland region.

Hume stated, “It wouldn't be appropriate to proceed with this event in the city at this time,” emphasising that Waka Kotahi remains committed to enabling Aucklanders from across Tāmaki Makaurau to travel across the bridge on foot, bikes, scooters, and other wheeled devices.

The planning and organisational work that has already been done means the agency will be ready to go when the events are rescheduled.

“We are working to secure another set of dates for next summer from November,” said Hume.

The Walk It, Wheel It event was expected to draw large crowds and offered a unique opportunity for people to experience the iconic Auckland Harbour Bridge.
