Wayne Brown cracks down on cones: AA backs proposal

Wayne Brown has launched an offensive against traffic management, asking Auckland Transport to shave down its annual NZD$145 million spend.

According to Brown, cones are ‘annoying’ and contractors are 'the worst people on the road' because they take up too much space.

Speaking with Tova O'Brien on Tuesday morning, Automobile Association policy director Martin Glynn said stoppages definitely seem to be annoying a lot of people in Tāmaki Makaurau.

"There's a strong view that traffic management has become completely over the top," Glynn said.

"[At] some sites, way more cones are being put down than really needed for safety reasons and it's just adding to congestion.

"It's no wonder people are getting frustrated."

Glynn believes fewer rules will lead to less stress for road users.

"We've certainly seen research in the past that show motorists can only cope with so many signs," he said.

"The mayor's right, it does lead to road rage at times.

"They're applying a very prescriptive set of rules and we think there needs to be a lot more flexibility there.

"It's really about applying the right risk management approach to a particular site."
