Prime Minister announces Ginny Andersen as replacement Police Minister

On Monday afternoon, Labour MP Ginny Andersen was appointed as the new Police Minister.

Although Ginny Andersen may not be a name that you are likely to recognise, Andersen was promoted to Cabinet by Prime Minister Chris Hipkins at the beginning of 2023 and has taken on three portfolios, including Digital Economy, Seniors, and Small Business.

Andersen's latest appointment as the Police Minister is expected to be her most challenging role yet. Despite this, the Prime Minister has expressed confidence in her ability to handle the position, citing her relevant experience.

Today FM Political Commentator Josie Pagani spoke to Lloyd Burr about Andersen's appointment to the role.

"Not many people know her, she hasn't had a hugely high profile, so [it's] interesting she's been given this big, really difficult portfolio [which is] high profile," Pagani said.

"If she can prove herself in that, that will help raise her profile."

However, regardless of people not necessarily knowing her name, Pagani said looking through Andersen's CV, she is well qualified for the role.

"You look at past Police Ministers, she's actually worked for the police in a civilian role doing policy analysis and so on, so she does actually understand the police.

"In that sense, she's probably more well-qualified than just about anybody else who's had the portfolio recently."
