'Major damage' - Hawke's Bay network battered after Cyclone Gabrielle

There are still widespread power outages across the country, including in Hawke's Bay which is one of the worst-hit areas.

Lines company 'Unison' owns and operates the electricity network in Hawke's Bay.

Speaking with Lloyd Burr on Wednesday afternoon, Unison spokesperson Danny Gough said the damage is 'significant'.

"We have approximately 13,000 [without power] in Hastings and 32,000 in Napier, so big numbers," Gough said.

"We have a large number of assets impacted - poles down, substations inundated with flood water slips, etc.

"It is major damage, there's no doubt about it."

Gough said Unison hasn't been able to get to a lot of the places impacted by the storm as of yet due to road closures and flood water, but told Burr the team is still doing everything they can.

"We've got all of our crews who are extremely motivated to get out there and get stuck in… As soon as we can get there and those floodwaters go away, we'll get stuck into it.

"We have had to deploy aircraft and helicopters, etc, just to try and give us a sense of what we're facing. But of course, until you can get down there and actually look at the assets close up then we're not really going to understand the damage."

Gough said he is hopeful those who rely on power for medical reasons have backup batteries or a backup plan to ensure they have a source of electricity.

"Our advice has always been and will always remain that they need to ensure that they are getting in touch with their primary medical provider or Whānau and so I'm hoping that that is all taken care of.

"I would also expect them to be working very closely with Civil Defence, to be working very closely with that vulnerable community."
