Panic-buying ensues as Cyclone Gabrielle approaches

As Cyclone Gabrielle approaches, people are beginning to prepare for the weekend storm.

People are getting emergency supplies such as torches if the electricity goes out, water bottles if the taps stop working as well as food in case they can't leave their homes.

Aucklanders are not wasting time, with an image from Albany's PAK'nSAVE showing customers with trolleys filled to the brim and lines as long as five or six people at each counter.

Countdown and Foodstuffs have told the Today FM Newsroom that stores are well-placed to deal with stock demands and weather impacts.

Countdown’s Managing Director Spencer Sonn said people need not panic.

"We want to reassure our customers that our business is in a really good position to provide customers with the food and groceries that they need," Sonn said.

"As many will know, we're pretty well rehearsed in dealing with all kinds of pandemics and natural disasters."

The odds of Cyclone Gabrielle skipping Aotearoa are looking slim, with the tropical weather system intensifying into a severe category three cyclone.

In case of evacuation, Emergency Management Minister Kieran McAnulty suggests having a bag for everyone in your house, with essential items, like food, medication, and torches.

McAnulty is also reminding everyone to tie down outdoor items like trampolines and to check if neighbours need help.

With power outages likely, McAnulty also said to have cash ready, as EFTPOS may not be available.

Auckland Emergency Management has said sandbags will be available on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 for those who need them.
