Tova O'Brien: Do not forget about Ukraine because of crisis fatigue

Opinion: One year ago today the world recoiled in horror as Russia defied all expert analysis, all logic, all diplomacy, and all humanity when it unleashed its tyranny on Ukraine.

Thousands of others have lost their parents, and hundreds of thousands, maybe millions more, have lost their homes, schools, and playgrounds.

Putin’s planned two-day special military operation is now 365 days of war crimes, crimes against humanity and heartache.

And let’s be honest we’re only talking about it now because it’s the anniversary.

Hell, are you even still listening to me? Did you start zoning out when I mentioned Ukraine? 

When we interviewed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv back in August, one of the things keeping him up at night was the world’s flagging attention…

Yes, we have our own internal matters to settle, as Zelensky put it, but we cannot forget Ukraine. 

Cyclone victims here are issuing the same pleas to all of us about them right now. Not to get Gabrielle fatigue. Not to forget what they’re going through and that they need help.

The same happened after Christchurch - the earthquakes and the terror attacks. 

Disaster/crisis fatigue.

We all have lives to live, and we all have problems of our own but supporting people, fighting for people, remembering people - doing it far tougher than us, no matter where in the world they are - is a very small offering. 

And not just once a year on anniversaries.
