Prime Minister Chris Hipkins announces Stuart Nash will not be sacked

Numerous instances of inappropriate comments have pushed former Police Minister Stuart Nash to the bottom of cabinet rankings, citing a "pattern of behaviour".

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has revealed another situation where Nash contacted an MBIE official to take a look at an immigration case.

It follows public comments on a case and revelations he called the Police Minister to discuss a sentence.

On Friday afternoon, Hipkins fronted the media over the Nash saga, announcing that he has chosen not to dismiss the Napier MP.

"As I've indicated, he has not upheld the standards that I would expect but I have carefully considered each of the instances in question," Hipkins said at Parliament.

"I have weighed them against other instances where Ministers have and have not been dismissed."

Hipkins said he has asked Nash whether he can think of any other times he might have overstepped the mark - other than the ones already known about.

He said the troubled Napier MP is having a good think.

"I've asked him whether there are other issues that I should be aware of and he cannot recall or doesn't have any recollection of others."

However, Hipkins said three strikes and Nash is out.

"He's aware that this is his last chance so any further lapses in that area will clearly result in him no longer being a minister."
