Temporary fix sees Muriwai resident's water reconnected after major landslide

Residents of Muriwai will from Saturday onwards have easier access to clean water thanks to an interim solution set up by Watercare.

The temporary fix was implemented after a major landslide severely damaged the Muriwai Water Treatment Plant in the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle.

Watercare's Northern Networks Manager, Tim Scheirlinck said a tanker has been parked at the Sand Dunz Café since February 14, providing emergency drinking water to the community while planning for a short-term network solution was underway.

The temporary fix involves a water tanker that will store water similar to a reservoir. The water will be pumped directly back into the existing network using a mobile pump station.

The tanker will be regularly topped up to maintain supply to customers whose homes haven’t been red-stickered.

Residents are being asked to be mindful of their water use while Watercare investigates the state of the treatment plant and network.

They are being urged to keep showers to four minutes, only use dishwashers and washing machines when they’re full, and turn off the tap when brushing their teeth.

The temporary solution is expected to provide relief until a more permanent fix is put in place.
