Dairy Farmers Combating Food Insecurity In Taranaki

In the low socio-economic area of Taranaki, food insecurity is a constant struggle. However, local dairy farmers Trish and Glen Rankin are making a difference by donating over 5,241 servings of dairy products through initiatives like Meat the Need and Feed Out.

"Donating is such a small, easy thing to do on the farm that can help families like ours feed their kids," says Trish Rankin.

As grocery costs continue to soar, the Rankins recognise their privilege of accessing fresh meat and milk directly from their farm.

"I know what it’s like to take things out of our trolley because we’ve gone over budget. Most people aren’t as lucky as we are to not have to purchase those expensive items."

Rankin is passionate about ensuring all families have access to nutritious New Zealand dairy products.

"If people have our really good New Zealand milk in their homes, regardless of how they’ve got it, they will see it, use it, and choose it every time over something less nutritious."

Having spent 20 years as a teacher, Rankin understands the detrimental impact of hunger and poor nutrition on children.

"They’re low, have little ability to focus in class, their behaviour worsens, and sometimes all they come to school with is something that will put them on a sugar high, then they crash."

Rankin emphasises the importance of providing children with better food choices to set them up for success in life. By donating dairy products, the Rankins aim to make a significant impact on the community.

"It’s so minimal. We raise a calf for IHC, a calf for Hospice every year, and donate some meat and milk. It’s such a small amount that can be absorbed in your business but can have a big impact."

Zellara Holden, General Manager of Meat the Need and Feed Out, praises the Rankins and other farmers for their generosity.

"We are incredibly thankful for all our donors. It really is proof that a little goes a long way, and it’s the collective effort that makes a difference when it comes to putting our home-grown protein and calcium on the plates of those who need it most."

Meat the Need and Feed Out facilitate donations of livestock, milk, and cash, transforming them into nutritious meals supplied to over 115 food banks and community organizations nationwide.

Through their efforts, the Rankins and other participating farmers are quietly breaking down barriers and providing essential nutrition to those who need it most, proving that even small contributions can have a significant impact.
