Tim Southee steps up to captain Blackcaps

Blackcaps talisman Kane Williamson will not have the 'C' next to his name in test cricket anymore with Tim Southee becoming his successor.

Southee spoke on Marc Peard Sports about his responsibilities for the upcoming two-test trip to Pakistan.

"I'll obviously still work extremely close with Kane," said Southee.

"With Kane being our most successful and best captain, it's nice to have him there to lean on.

"Having had leadership opportunities in other formats, being a leader in the group for a while, and the care for the team, it's all contributed to this decision."

Veteran bowler Southee did not expect to be named captain this year, but believes not much will change.

"There's a little bit more responsibility and few decision-makings.

"The goal is still the same, to try to win games of cricket and make people back here in New Zealand proud.

"It's about over the years having accumulated bits and pieces from different captains and putting into place what you think is right.

"It's about learning from those other guys and putting your own spin on it."

The Blackcaps will play Pakistan from Boxing Day, with Tom Latham as vice-captain.
