We need everything' - Turkish MP Burak Erbay pleads for help from New Zealand Government

The aftermath of a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake has left Turkey and Syria in dire need of assistance, as rescuers desperately search for survivors among the rubble of levelled buildings.

With the official death toll now exceeding 2700, this number is expected to rise in the coming days.

The World Health Organisation has expressed particular concern for areas in Turkey where communication lines remain down, making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage and needs.

Turkish MP Burak Erbay told Tova O'Brien they will need all the help they can get, including from New Zealand.

"We need everything," said Erby.

"There are people under the buildings and after this, it's cold days waiting for us in March. They need food and clothes."

He said the following weeks and months will be incredibly difficult as the country pulls itself back together.
